History

The department of Geography Teaching was established within the department of Social Sciences in 1982. It has offered doctorate?s Degree since 1994.

The Phd Degree in Geography Education is awarded to the graduates who successfully fullfilled programme courses and who defend their thesis in front of an academic jury.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle Degree in the same or in related disciplines. Acceptable score on ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) or Equivalent GRE, GMAT score. Acceptable score on Language Proficiency Tests. Acceptable weighted score based on the first or second cycle (with thesis) cumulative grade point average (GPA) and ALES score. However, ALES requirement is waived for the graduates of doctorate /arts proficiency/medical residency/ dental residency/ veterinary residency/ pharmaceutical residency programs as well as for the admissions to the graduate programs offered by the Conservatory and the departments of Fine Arts Faculty, where students are admitted only by the Artistic Aptitude Test. Final admission is based on the evaluation of the related academic unit committee. International student admission requirements are decided by the Graduate School Executive Committee.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Successful students who have completed at least one semester in the graduate program of another institute within the university or another higher education institution may apply for a transfer in the announced dates if the quota is determined by the Board of Directors. The conditions for admission of the transfer are determined by the institute board.

Exemption requests of students for the courses taken at graduate program of another department/university with a successful grade are evaluated by the Administrative Board of the Institute by the recommendation of the head of the departments according to the provisions of Dokuz Eylül University Exemption and Adaptation Directives.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

PhD program consists of at least seven courses, thesis proposal, field of expertise, proficiency exam, seminar and thesis work, not less than at least 21 local credits.
The student workload for a semester is 30 ECTS, and the total workload to complete the PhD program is 240 ECTS.
In addition to midterm and final exams, learning activities such as reports, assignments, quizzes, seminar presentations and project studies can be used in the performance evaluation of the student during the semester. In order for the student to be successful in this course, the grade must be at least 75 out of 100 (at least 2.50 out of 4.00). Seminar, thesis work and specialization courses are evaluated as successful / unsuccessful.

Profile of the Programme

The aim of the program is to bring up researchers who can evaluate, interpret the data compiled from space related with physical and human geographical issues in the framework of geographical principals and who offer solution proposals by using appropriate data and methods, and space analysis via the GIS (Geographical Information Systems) and RS (Remote Sensing) software and hardware. The aim of the program is to bring up researchers who can evaluate his/her environment from the geographical perspective in a holistic approach by using contemporary strategies, teaching methods and techniques in geography education and who can perform collective activities with native and foreign colleagues. The program is designed to promote personal and professional growth for geography teaching. The language of instruction is Turkish. There are Turkish and English lessons in that program.

1. To be evaluate, analyze and provide solution proposals using the data collected from the land about the framework of Geography within the principles of Geography.
2. To be able to effective evaluations and applications regarding the sustainable management of the natural and cultural resources in a holistic approach.
3. To be able to develop valuable materials in the graphs, figure, maps and so on depending on Geographical Information System and remote sensing methods for local governments and non-governmental organizations.
4. To be able to prepare or create appropriate learning environments and educational materials by using contemporary educational procedure, strategies and approaches.
5. To know the concepts and phenomena relevant to Geography and evaluate their environt in accordance with the Geographical view point.
6. To be able to contact with foreign colleagues and make common activities related to the geography education.

Graduates may apply to post doctorate studies.
Graduates who successfully completed the Phd Degree may apply to post-doctorate programmes in the same discipline.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Students must attend classes, practices and examinations. In order for students to qualify for midterms they should attend 70% of the theoretical classes. Students attendance is followed by their Instructor. For almost all required and elective courses there are two written examinations: One midterm examination (given during each semester and dates of which are announced by the Department in the first month of the semester) and one final exam. The instructor announces the weekly course content, the course book and how students will be evaluated and the dates of the exams to the students and the Institute at the beginning of the semester. The instructor evaluated the students depending on their midterm and final grades, attendance to the class, their additional work such as projects, presentations and assignments which were presented at the beginning of the semester.
A make up exam is offered for graduate classes. Upon the approval of the Institute Board students can take the exam from the lessons that they have already passed in order to increase their GPA.
To be able to pass a lesson a graduate student must have minimum CB.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program is comprised of at least 7 courses (minimum 21, maximum 30 national credits) more than, passing a qualifying examination, preparing and defending a doctoral dissertation, in total 240 ECTS credits.
