Vision

Our vision is to train effective mathematics teachers who achieve international standards, are creative and open to innovations, adopt lifelong learning philosophy, have general knowledge of culture and high national values, can make educational and research projects, use new educational technologies, have developed ethical values, play a leading role in mathematics education.

Mission

Our mission is to train mathematics teachers who are knowledgeable in the field and education of mathematics, who can question, and who can teach their knowledge in the most useful way.

Establishment (date of foundation, general structure of the program)
Department of Primary Mathematics Education, affiliated to Dokuz Eylül University Buca Faculty of Education, was established in 1997 to train primary school mathematics teachers within the framework of the restructuring of education faculties. Our department, which was under the umbrella of the Department of Primary Education in the 1998-1999 academic year, has been providing education under the Department of Mathematics and Science Education as the Elementary Mathematics Teaching Program of the Department of Mathematics Education since 2016. In addition to the 4-year undergraduate education, graduate and doctoral education can be continued under the Institute of Educational Sciences. The language of instruction in all undergraduate and graduate Elementary Mathematics Education programs is Turkish.

Program Profile (the purpose of the program, the structure of the program, the areas it is headed towards, the department facilities)

In addition to strengthening the professional knowledge and experience of our students, our department also cares about directing them to sports, arts, communication and cultural activities that support their personal development and improve their creativity and social relations. Department of Elementary Mathematics Education, with its 4-year undergraduate program based on contemporary approaches in teacher training, aims to train qualified teachers who are aware of contemporary assessment-evaluation approaches, who can organize teaching activities in line with current educational needs and technological developments, can use different teaching methods and strategies in teaching processes, and can follow the work done in their field. In the framework of this purpose, the curriculum of the department included courses aimed at both ensuring the professional development of students, field knowledge and general culture.

Since 2010, the BOLOGNA Process (European Higher Education Area harmonization studies), which enables the citizens of the countries within the European Higher Education Area to travel around Europe for higher education or working, has started. The department aims to increase knowledge and experience by supporting student and academician exchange through bilateral agreements with internationally reputable institutions. The department has bilateral agreements within the scope of ERASMUS Student and Academic Exchange Program as of 2012. Our department serves in Cahit Arf Building and has 4 classrooms and 10 rooms for academic staff. There are multimedia tools such as projectors and smart boards in the classrooms.

Within the faculty, there is a library that students of the department can use and a multi-purpose reading hall that is open 24/7 to perform their studies outside of class hours. There is an Instructional Technologies R&D Laboratory, where our students can have the opportunity to research, develop and apply instructional technologies, including 3D printers, robotics development kit, hologram, virtual reality glasses and similar technologies. The Multi-Purpose Reading Hall has a hologram, wireless internet connection and a modern study environment that undergraduate students can use in an educational manner to meet their study needs.
