Foundation (foundation date, general structure of the program)
The Primary Education Mathematics Education Department, affiliated with Dokuz Eylül University’s Buca Faculty of Education, was established in 1997 with the aim of training primary school mathematics teachers as part of the restructuring of education faculties. Initially under the Primary Education Department until the 1998-1999 academic year, our department has been offering education under the Primary Mathematics Education Program of the Mathematics and Science Education Department since 2016. In addition to the 4-year undergraduate program, both master’s and doctoral education is also conducted under the Institute of Educational Sciences. The language of instruction for all undergraduate and graduate Primary Mathematics Education programs is Turkish.

Our department emphasizes not only strengthening students’ professional knowledge and experience but also supporting their personal development through sports, arts, communication, and cultural activities that enhance creativity and social relationships. The Primary Mathematics Education Department aims to train qualified teachers who can integrate contemporary teaching approaches, are aware of modern assessment methods, and can organize teaching activities in line with current educational needs and technological developments. The program also includes courses that enhance students’ subject knowledge and general culture within this framework.

The department aims to enhance knowledge and experience through student and faculty exchanges with internationally respected institutions via bilateral agreements. Our department is located in the Cahit Arf Building, housing 4 classrooms and 10 offices for academic staff. Classrooms are equipped with multimedia tools such as projectors and smart boards.
Within the faculty, students have access to a library and a multi-purpose reading room open 24/7 for study outside of class hours. The Teaching Technologies R&D Laboratory offers opportunities for students to research, develop, and apply instructional technologies including 3D printers, robotics kits, holograms, virtual reality goggles, and similar technologies. The Multi-Purpose Reading Room provides an education-focused environment with holograms, wireless internet access, and modern study spaces for undergraduate students.
