The Department of Mathematics Education, affiliated with the Faculty of Education at Dokuz Eylül University, Buca, was established in 1982. Originally part of the Department of Science within the Faculty, operating as the Department of Mathematics Education, it briefly functioned as an independent Mathematics department until 1998. Following a restructuring of the faculty in 1998, it became a department within the Secondary Science and Mathematics Education Department. Since 2016, it has operated as the Mathematics Education Department under the Department of Mathematics and Science Education, offering a formal education program in Mathematics Teaching.
In addition to a four-year undergraduate program, the department also offers graduate education including master’s and doctoral programs under the Institute of Educational Sciences. The medium of instruction for all undergraduate and graduate programs in Mathematics Education is Turkish.
The Mathematics Education Department aims to train qualified teachers who can adapt their teaching practices to technological advancements, utilize various teaching methods and strategies, incorporate contemporary assessment techniques, and stay abreast of developments in the field. The curriculum not only focuses on professional development but also includes courses on subject knowledge and general culture.
Since 2010, as part of the Bologna Process (the European Higher Education Area), which facilitates mobility and compatibility of educational systems within Europe, the department awards Diploma Supplements to graduates starting from 2011. Furthermore, through bilateral agreements with internationally reputable institutions, the department promotes student and academic exchanges to enhance knowledge and experience. As of 2012, the department has bilateral agreements under the ERASMUS Student and Academic Exchange Program.
