General Description

Establishment (date of establishment, general structure of the program)
The institution, which started to train music teachers under the name of İzmir Education Institute Music Department in the 1973-1974 academic year, continued its education services as İzmir Higher Teacher Training School Music Department (1978) and Buca Education Faculty Music Department (1982). Within the framework of the restructuring program of the Faculties of Education, in the 1998-1999 academic year, the unit named DEÜ Buca Faculty of Education Fine Arts Education Department Music Education Department; Instrument training, voice training and music theory are mainly studied at the undergraduate level. Curriculum has been implemented at the master’s level since the 1992-1993 academic year and at the doctoral level since the 2001-2002 academic year.

Students who successfully complete all courses in the curriculum and are successful in their thesis defense receive a doctorate degree in Music Education.

Admission and Registration Conditions
Acceptance based on the GPA and ALES score earned in the same or related disciplines, Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree with Thesis, Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) or equivalent GRE, GMAT and acceptable score on Language Proficiency. It is necessary to have a weighted score that can be achieved. However; ALES score is not required for the applications of graduates of doctorate / proficiency in art / specialization in medicine / specialization in dentistry / specialization in veterinary medicine / specialization in pharmacy to doctoral programs, and in the admission of students to the main arts and departments in the institutes of Conservatory programs and Fine Arts Faculties programs that accept students only with special talent exam. Final acceptance depends on the evaluation of the relevant academic unit commission. Admission conditions for international students are decided by the Institute Board of Directors.

Rules on Recognition of Prior Learning
Successful students who have completed at least one semester in another institute department within the university or in the graduate program of another higher education institution can apply for horizontal transfer on the announced dates, if a quota is determined by the Board of Directors. Conditions for admission through horizontal transfer are determined by the institute’s board of directors.
Requests for exemption from the courses of the program in which the student is registered, in exchange for the courses he/she has taken and succeeded in while enrolled in the graduate program of another department/university, are evaluated by the Board of Directors of the Institute, after taking the opinion of the Department Head in accordance with the provisions of the Dokuz Eylül University Exemption and Adjustment Directive.

Qualification Conditions and Rules
PhD program; It consists of at least seven courses, not less than 21 local credits, taken from the course groups specified in the teaching plans, thesis proposal, area of ​​expertise course, qualifying exam, seminar and thesis study.
Student workload for one semester is 30 ECTS, and the total workload required to complete the doctoral program is 240 ECTS.
In addition to midterms and final exams, learning activities such as reports, assignments, quizzes, seminar presentations and project studies can be used to evaluate the student’s performance during the semester. In order for the student to be considered successful in the relevant course, this grade must be at least 75 out of 100 (at least 2.50 out of 4.00). Seminars, thesis studies and specialization courses are evaluated as pass/fail.

Adheres to Ataturk’s principles; acquired concepts, knowledge and skills related to the field of music; Knows music teaching methods and techniques; recognizes national and international musical cultures; have awareness of social responsibility; To raise an exemplary music teacher who is open to academic development.
These education and training services are provided with the aim of contributing to the academic structuring of both the institution and other institutions. The program language is Turkish.

1 To be able to use the knowledge and understanding, or the opportunity, based on the expansion and strengthening of the competencies associated with the first stage (undergraduate) of music teaching, in the development and implementation of original ideas in the field of music education.

3 To be able to clearly communicate the results of their research in the field of music education and the information and discussions that support them to experts or non-experts.

6 To have learning skills that will enable majors to perform national and universal musical works.

Employment Profiles of Graduates
The relevant doctoral degree provides its graduates with the rights and privileges necessary to practice their profession.
Graduates of the Music Education doctoral program can work as teachers in the Ministry of National Education and its affiliated private schools and private teaching institutions. They can work as academicians in relevant units of universities.

Transition to Higher Degree Programs
Graduates can apply for postdoctoral studies.

TYYÇ – Program Qualifications Relationship

Exams, Measurement and Evaluation
In order for students to take the final exams, they must have attended 70% of the theoretical courses and 80% of the practical/laboratories.
At least one midterm exam is held for each course in each semester. How the midterm exam, mid-term studies and final exams will be reflected in the success grade of that course, and the content of the course for the entire semester on a weekly basis, the course book and related literature, mid-term exam and application dates are notified to the Institute Directorate and students at the beginning of the semester by the faculty member teaching the course. The end-of-semester course grade to be given to the student is determined by the faculty member according to the principles included in the course introduction information given to the students and the institute at the beginning of the semester, taking into account the evaluation of midterm exams, final exam, and/or end-of-semester project work, as well as their mid-term studies and course attendance.

Make-up exams are offered in postgraduate courses. With the decision of the Institute Board of Directors, students may repeat the courses they have successfully completed in order to increase their GPA.
In order to be considered successful in a course, master’s, doctorate/art proficiency students must have received at least a (CB) grade as the end of semester grade from that course.

Graduation Requirements
PhD program; It consists of at least seven courses, a thesis proposal, a field of expertise course, a qualifying exam and a thesis study, provided that they are taken from the course groups specified in the teaching plans, with a minimum of twenty-one credits and not more than thirty credits. The total ECTS credits of the program is 240.
The doctoral study program consists of compulsory and elective courses. Graduation requirements are as detailed in the “Qualification Conditions and Rules” section.
